Voegeli adds an impressive list of legislators to his growing list of endorsements.

WINONA, MN, July 1, 2024 – Dwayne Voegeli (DFL- Winona), who is seeking to fill the vacant seat for State Representative of House District 26A, secured important endorsements of current legislators who are also educators in both the House and Senate. These legislators serve essential roles in passing legislation to support students and schools. Voegeli has been a teacher in Winona for 28 years and is a former Winona Teacher of the Year and a Finalist for the Minnesota Teacher of the Year Award.

Education, which represents about a quarter of the state budget, represents a huge responsibility for our elected leaders and a huge learning curve for new legislators. Given his background as an educator, Voegeli has expressed interest in serving on a committee overseeing education to ensure all Minnesotans are getting a world-class public education. Voegeli is also the only DFLer in the race to have attended a public school and has two children that graduated from Winona Area Public Schools. By expressing confidence in his campaign, these legislators also express confidence in Voegeli’s ability to use these experiences to contribute immensely in this essential issue area.

These legislator endorsements in a contested, partisan primary are rare and represent a growing consensus around Voegeli’s campaign amongst both DFLers and issue organizations. Just last week, Voegeli secured the confidence and endorsements of Pro-Choice Minnesota, Minnesota Nurses Association and the AFL-CIO over his primary opponent after securing EdMN earlier in the campaign. The campaign is confident that this momentum will carry Dwayne to victory in what is sure to be one of the closest races in the state this year, but will also be working hard to speak with every voter ahead of the August 13th primary vote.

Hear what these legislative leaders had to say about Dwayne’s candidacy:

“The ability to collaborate, listen, and work with everyone are the characteristics of a good teacher and the characteristics of an effective lawmaker,” said Senator Heather Gustafson (DFL-White Bear Lake), Vice Chair of the Senate Education Finance Committee. “Public service and community building are already strengths that strong teachers have and those experiences will serve well in the Minnesota legislature. It’s so exciting to see Dwayne Vogeli run for office knowing he’ll be ready on day one to serve the community he knows so well.”

“In a time of challenging issues in public education, Minnesota needs competent, thoughtful, and respectful leadership- building strong relationships between parents, students, teachers, and administrators. Dwayne Voegeli is doing that now in the community he has served for so long. Minnesota needs this kind of leadership and I’m excited to work with Dwayne from the Senate to put things right for all of our students from the youngest to the oldest” said Senator Mary Kunesh (DFL-New Brighton), Chair of the Senate Education Finance Committee. 448997583 122139426242253017 2589408050639638 n

“Minnesota is an education state, and we should continue to do the most we can to ensure that every student gets the best education they can possibly have in the US, no matter where they live,” said Sen Steve Cwodzinski (DFL- Eden Prairie), Chair of the Senate Education Policy Committee. “I have full confidence in Dwayne’s commitment to maintaining that closely held principle and his dedication to being a true champion for education in our state.”

“I am really excited about Dwayne’s candidacy and cannot wait to serve with him in the Minnesota House,” added Rep Josiah Hill (DFL-Stillwater), Vice Chair of the House Education Finance Committee. “As someone who started my path to public service as a teacher myself, I understand how much of an advantage he will have over other first-year representatives looking to make an impact for their449074815 122139462122253017 1086365070586441833 n communities.”

Dwayne Voegeli is the Chair of the Winona County Board, where he has served for 10 years and is a 28-year High School Social Studies Teacher. Going above and beyond as a teacher, he’s also volunteered his time advising multiple student groups, coaching basketball, serving on several district committees and more. While this important moment marks the official beginning of Dwayne’s road to representing us in St. Paul, it is really only the latest step in a journey that has spanned decades. From putting down roots as an educator in our public schools to spending years giving back through community service and local politics, he has proven himself a leader dedicated to Minnesota House District 26a.

Dwayne Voegeli has a long history of advocating for gun violence prevention 2

The Dwayne Voegeli for Minnesota House 26a campaign is proud to announce that Dwayne has been awarded the Moms Demand Action Candidate Distinction. This highlights Dwayne Voegeli’s commitment to advocating for gun violence prevention. One example of this was in the spring of 2018 after the tragic school shooting in Parkland Florida. Dwayne helped high school students organize a vigil, school walkout, protest at Lake Park, and trip to the MN capitol to advocate for gun violence prevention and common sense gun control.
Skye Schultz, a student activist involved at the time, states “Dwayne Voegeli was instrumental in helping students plan and organize our events in solidarity with March for Our Lives. He never took the spotlight, but was a great source of encouragement for students and worked behind the scenes to coordinate much of the protest and trip to the capitol.”
